The Group owns and operates three polymetallic underground mines and associated concentrators in the East Region of Kazakhstan.
The Group operates three underground mines in the East Region - Orlovsky, Artemyevsky and Irtyshsky. The ore from these mines is processed at the Orlovsky and Nikolayevsky concentrators.
The volume of ore mined at East Region and Bozymchak decreased by 22% to 3,050 kt (2022: 3,886 kt), driven by the transition from open pit mining at Bozymchak to underground mining in the second half of the year. Mining activities at the start of the year focused on stripping works at Bozymchak to prepare for the commencement of underground operations.
Ore processed in 2023 of 3,567 kt was 4% below the prior year (2022: 3,722 kt). Throughput at the East Region concentrators fell due to down time for maintenance, which was partially offset by higher ore processed volumes at Bozymchak.
Copper production of 46.4 kt in 2023 fell by 7% compared with the previous year (2022: 50.1 kt). As expected, copper grades processed at Bozymchak declined to 0.60% (2022: 0.66%), while reduced ore throughput at East Region offset a slight increase in grades processed from 1.98% in 2022 to 2.01% in 2023.
Copper output from East Region and Bozymchak is expected to be approximately 45 kt in 2024.
